School to get 5,000 copies of The Star
A CHILD'S imagination is limitless when given the right materials and encouragement to express himself.
Assigned to create picture-stories using words and photographs from editions of The Star, SMK Teluk Kumbar Form 1 students told stories of a rich kid named Steven who lived in an expensive condominium and owned a flashy car and yacht; and of friends Alia and Aini who went exploring in a secret garden to catch wild birds.
The activity was part of a sponsorship ceremony where Advanced Micro Devices Export Sdn Bhd (AMD) pledged 5,000 copies of The Star to the school.
Students will receive 150 copies of the newspaper every Wednesday, to utilise The Star's Newspaper in Education (NiE) pullouts that focus on primary and secondary English, Mathematics and Science, until November 2008.
"AMD tries to rotate its sponsorship to different schools every year. At the moment, it is concentrating its efforts on schools which are located on the island's outskirts," said AMD senior executive managing director Datuk Dr Mohd Sofi Osman.
"English is essential in today's world, especially with increasing globalisation.
"The current generation of students faces a lot of challenges and we hope to help equip them with knowledge for the future," he said.
