Testimonial by Prof Dr Lee Karling

Testimonial and Reflections as Faculty
with EDS Business School

By: Professor Dr. Lee Kar Ling

Professor Dr Lee Karling is one of the EDS Senior Faculty, and also a World Class Talent and Human Resource trainer.

Greetings to all as we look forward to another exciting year in 2014! With the New Year in the fore, I would like to take stock of the achievements, awards, and exciting developments with EDS Business School for 2013.

Personally, as Senior Faculty member of EDS, I have learnt much from both the Postgraduate candidates that I facilitate as well as via sharing from other Faculty members. EDS is truly different in the sense that its syllabus is very practical and hands-on and it is able to bring to the workshops a sense of ‘Reality’ which many other postgraduate programs are unable to do. Such practical information and consolidation or integration with the theoretical concepts have provided the postgraduate candidates with the required skills and competencies to design and execute changes within their organizations upon returning home from the ‘learning’ sessions with EDS Faculty.

Professor Dr Lee Karling at Mindoro State University in Capalan City, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines, facilitated the EDS CEO Competency Course during September 2013.

The sessions are also very lively and interesting as two-way communication is often forged between the Faculty and postgraduates of EDS. This not only stimulates the minds to indulge in critical thinking, but also helps both the postgraduate candidates and the Faculty to delve deeper into a particular concept or theory in order to ‘operationalize’ it more effectively at the workplace.

Professor Dr Lee Karling conducted the MBA and PhD classes at King Park Avenue Hotel in Bangkok on October 2012.

The interactions from such exercise are truly an experience that must be ‘felt’ personally and no vicarious learning could ever replace the interactions provided in EDS’ workshops or learning sessions.

Professor Dr Lee Karling conducted the Cinese MBA class at the EDS Executive Learning Centre located at the IOI Boulevard in Kuala Lumpur.

Another unique value proposition of EDS' programs and workshop is that they are conducted in various languages such as English, Mandarin, and even Vietnamese! This is truly a unique feature as the Bi-lingual sessions provides an opportunity for native speakers of specific languages (Eg: Vietnamese) to be exposed and tuned to the use of English, yet, having a Bi-lingual facilitator to execute the translation.

Professor Dr Lee Karling conducted the PhD in Management classes with Vietnamese tutorial support at King Park Avenue Hotel in Bangkok on October 2012.

This adds value to the learning as the participants not only learns about the practical skills, competencies, and theoretical knowledge provided, but at the same time, is able to commence their absorption of another language which will provide them with an additional comparative advantage upon graduation.

Professor Dr Lee Karling at Puerto Princesa City, the main campus of Palawan State University, Philippines to facilitate the EDS CEO Competency Course on September 2013.

Besides the Bi-lingual nature of some of the workshops, another unique feature of the program is that the workshops or sessions are conducted in various locations such as Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, and China with more countries to come.

Professor Dr Karling successfully delivered the International Residential Advanced Management Program in Chengdu, China, during 25 to 31 August 2011.

With the opportunity to travel and explore different countries and locations, postgraduate and entrepreneurial candidates of EDS will have the opportunity to observe and review the business practices of these countries, and to learn to appreciate the business cultures inherent in these countries. Such an experience is not easy to come by, and thus far, only one other postgraduate provider for FULL Time candidates is able to do that, but, on a less organized, less systematic, and less frequent manner as compared to EDS.

Professor Dr Karling with our students from Vietnam and at Chengdu, China during our International Residential MBA and PhD program at King Park Avenue Hotel in Bangkok on October 2012.

EDS on the other hand, caters to working professionals with busy schedules to come together and network in all the above countries. It is an amazing achievement for EDS to be able to bring together working professionals of diverse cultural backgrounds to come together for experience sharing. The cultural experiences obtained are highly valued by the participants of EDS programs and workshop and brings to them a priceless experience that no amount of textbooks can provide!

Prof Dr Karling facilitated the PhD in Educational Management Program at the EDS Executive Learning Centre in Kuala Lumpur on October 2013.

This achievement is very true too as the postgraduate who had undergone EDS’s programs and workshops have all advanced in their careers either via internal promotions or external job opportunities. This is due to the value obtained from the EDS workshops that allowed the working professionals to apply what they have learnt when they return from EDS’s workshops or sessions. This type of opportunity is often not as effectively provided by other postgraduate programs due to the intense focus of other programs on theories without execution or application.

Prof Dr Karling with Prof Dr Ben Lee, Founder and President of EDS Business School at the EDS 2013 Convocation on 17 November 2013 at Gurney Resort Hotel, Penang, Malaysia.

EDS is also an exciting organization to be associated with! The Founder and President/CEO, Professor Dr. Ben Lee is a visionary with strong business acumen and a commitment to education excellence. Various recognitions and accolades given to EDS via awards received is testimony to the commitment of Prof. Dr. Ben Lee to education excellence in all spheres. Backed up by an efficient and highly committed team, EDS is poised to scale new heights in 2014 and beyond!

I am pleased to be associated with the EDS team as I have grown too from the learning experiences obtained via the Bi-lingual sessions, and the exciting travels with EDS. It has truly expanded my horizons and inspired me to pursue excellence in every spheres of my life.

KUDOS to EDS for 2013 achievements and we look forward to more exciting events and accolades with EDS in 2014!

Atif Hassan at IFSU Main Campus

Atif Hassan, our PhD candidate shares his experience on attending the International Residential PhD in Management program at Ifugao State University's main campus, Lamut, Ifugao, Philippiness.

Jeepneys are the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines, which have become a ubiquitous symbol of Philippine culture and art.

Studying at the IFSU main campus was a wholesome edutainment experience. As it was a beautiful blend of study, tourism and cultural entertainment. I can never forget the memories of the warmest welcome we received from the University President and his top management, faculty and students of the Ifugao State University (IFSU) on our arrival to its main campus for attending our doctoral residency study session.

Meeting with Dr Serafin Ngohayon , President of Ifugao State University at his Presidential Office at the Administrative Building at the main campus, Lamut Ifugao.

I am really impressed by the magical personality of Dr Serafin L. Ngohayon, he is a true professional and very dignified person. I must appreciate the competence and program organization ability of EDS staff under the esteemed leadership of Prof Dr Ben Lee. From Manila to Cauayan and during our stay at Ifugao and from Tuguegarao to Manila, EDS staff arranged every event very professionally and showed hospitality whenever interacted.

Visit the Ifugao Rice Terrace with fellow students from China and Vietnam. The Ifugao Rice Terraces are 2,000-year old terraces that were carved into the mountains of Ifugao in the Philippines by ancestors of the indigenous people. The Rice Terraces are commonly referred to by Filipinos as the "Eighth Wonder of the World".

The main campus of IFSU is situated in the Province of Ifugao. Surrounded by hand-carved rice terraces which are featured in the World Heritage Foundation List and considered one of the eight wonders of the world, the famed terraces are a marvelous engineering feat achieved by the ancients to maximize use of the land for food production.

With fellow students at the IFSU Centre for Foreign and Japanese Studies.

I went IFSU main campus (Philippines) for my PhD study, but the President of the University asked me to give lecture to their faculty and management. It was a wonderful experience to interact with the academicians at the Center for Foreign and Japan Studies.

Greeting by IFSU University President and his senior management team.

Joyce Bodah Testimonial

A Tribute to EDS Business School and IFSU by Dr Joyce A. Bodah

Joyce A. Bodah defense her DBA dissertation at Kuala Lumpur on February 2013. With fellow examiners (from left to right) Prof Dr Nelson T. Binag, Dr Balakrishnan Muniapan, Joyce Bodah, Dr Faith Basilio and Prof Dr Ben Lee.

I wish to thank all my professors from EDS Business School for all the things I’ve learned from them. In our quest for knowledge while working full time, EDS, in collaboration with the Ifugao State University (IFSU), has made it possible for us to obtain a degree in spite of the demands of work, family and relationships, and community/church organizations where we belong.

I am happy to complete my degree and still had quality time for other important things and people in my life. When I was making some of my assignments and started writing my dissertation, it was when our baby was born and it was quite challenging knowing that the first 3 to 5 years of a child’s development is the most critical stage. I believe that I don’t need to forsake the important things and people entrusted to me just to flow with the world’s pace and trends. But as important as my family, I had to finish my degree because I believe that it is one way of helping the institution where God placed me to serve and earn a living.

Organizations, like my University, need to upgrade their human resources most especially the faculty members to improve their services to the students who are the most important people in the University– the reason for its existence and the object of the attainment of the University vision-mission.

Joyce A. Bodah received her Certificate of Completion from Prof Dr Ben Lee during the Closing Ceremony for the November 2008 MBA and DBA/PhD International Residential Study session.

A university’s faculty profile reflects the quality of services it provides. With EDS’ professors being expert in the field of business and management, they have equipped us with the knowledge and attitudes required to better perform our duties and functions. In these trying times, what employers and organizations need are people who are not only equipped with knowledge and skills but also with attitudes. In my assignment in Creating World Class Organizations, Jim Collins, the author of Good to Great which is based on his team’s research on the characteristics of good companies that were turned great, they found that the right person in the organization that could help the leader in making theorganization great “has more to do with character traits and innate capabilities than with specific knowledge, background, or skills”.

Further, the experience I had in pursuing the DBA degree from Ifugao State University in collaboration with EDS in Malaysia, was enriching and thus remarkable. It provides opportunities to see the other parts of this world and actually learn from it. Going to Malaysia for the International Residential Study was where I actually had a better picture of such concepts as globalization and its impact to the world and its various units and elements. Exposure to the wonders of my own country due to classes held in other partner-universities in other parts of the country, have delighted me to know that my country is truly a place worthy to be proud of. The diverse cultures and languages, beliefs and opinions, and the different personality characteristics of the people met and encountered, have offered rich insights in life and enlightenment of the reality of this present world.

Field study visit to Robert Bosch, a multi-national manufactures of car multimedia products and power tools.

Furthermore, then on - traditional modes of classes/lectures in EDS were both substantial and exciting. Use of technology-aided instructional materials by the professors was so effective that they could hold the attention of the students even for very long hours. The compressed lectures were augmented by the travels, guided study tours to local and multinational corporations, group dynamics, tourism-related activities, guided requirements or assignments, and on-line searches, among others.

At the EDS International Welcoming Dinner and the Networking Night.

It is hoped that from the education we received through this program between IFSU and EDS, we shall better contribute in turning our organization into a great one that would truly make valuable impacts on the people it serves and the communities it touches.

Testimonial by Miss Cairang Lamao, EDS MBA student from Qinghai, China

“The valuable knowledge, skills, experiences and even the teaching methods are just a treasure for me and it improved my competencies in my current career and I can use the advanced management knowledge and skills in my teaching environment.”

Ms. Cairang Lamao giving a speech during the closing ceremony of the EDS International Residential Study session in Bangkok, Thailand on 25 October 2012

I feel great gratitude to EDS Business School for providing me such brilliant opportunity to enrich my knowledge, improved my skills and expand my horizon through being outside of my country and meeting many people from differences countries. For me, to accomplish abroad MBA degree while working in Qinghai, China is a life-time benefit. Subsequently, the valuable knowledge, skills, experiences and even the teaching methods are just a treasure for me and it improved my competencies in my current career and I can use the advanced management knowledge and skills in my teaching environment.

Ms. Cairang Lamao busy with the class activities.

More precisely, being as an English teacher, I could not only transfer the knowledge we gained from the facilitators but also can use the teaching methods and skills in my own teaching procedures. For example, in Professor Dr Karling’s class, she created many interesting class activities to transfer difficult concept through very simple warm-up games and group presentations. All I could say is that the lecture’s teaching methods, skills and group work discussion are very useful, unique and impressive. I often use her teaching skills and methods in my own classes everyday, and students love all the activities and they really enjoy the activities the most and it is very efficient and productive. Therefore, many of my colleagues are also trying to use the teaching methods after observing my classes.

Ms. Cairang Lamao actively participate in the management game.

Moreover, all above mentioned are the newest concept and skills that make me feel more confident in my current job and even for my future adventure because I believe “teaching as an adventure” and so once we start, we’d never stop. Therefore, this MBA program with EDS is one of the greatest adventures that I have ever had.

Overall, again many thanks to EDS for helping me on the unexpected obstacles that I have encountered through the way and thank you very much for being so helpful.

All the best,

CAN YOU "ADD VALUE" TO YOUR JOB?

CHANGING LABOUR MARKET: Skills needed in the workplace are not taught in colleges

UNDERNEATH the huge drop in demand that drove unemployment up to nine per cent during the recession, there's been an important shift in the education-to-work model in America. Anyone who's been looking for a job knows what I mean. It is best summed up by the mantra from Harvard education expert Tony Wagner that the world doesn't care anymore what you know; all it cares "is what you can do with what you know".

And since jobs are evolving so quickly, with so many new tools, a bachelor's degree is no longer considered an adequate proxy by employers for your ability to do a particular job, and, therefore, be hired. So, more employers are designing their own tests to measure applicants' skills. And they increasingly don't care how those skills were acquired: home schooling, an online university, a massive open online course, or Yale. They just want to know one thing: can you add value?

One of the best ways to understand the changing labour market is to talk to the co-founders of HireArt (www.hireart.com): Eleonora Sharef, 27, a veteran of McKinsey; and Nick Sedlet, 28, a math whiz who left Goldman Sachs. Their start-up was designed to bridge the divide between job-seekers and job-creators.

"The market is broken on both sides," explained Sharef.

"Many applicants don't have the skills that employers are seeking, and don't know how to get them. But employers also have unrealistic expectations."

They're all "looking for purple unicorns: the perfect match. They don't want to train you, and they expect you to be overqualified".

In the new economy, "you have to prove yourself, and we're an avenue for candidates to do that."

"A degree document is no longer a proxy for the competency employers need."

Too many of the "skills you need in the workplace today are not being taught by colleges".

The way HireArt works, explained Sharef (who was my daughter's college roommate), is that clients -- from big companies, like Cisco, Safeway and Airbnb, to small family firms -- come with a job description and then HireArt designs online written and video tests relevant for that job. Then HireArt culls through the results and offers up the most promising applicants to the company, which chooses among them.

With 50,000 registered job-seekers on HireArt's platform, the company receives about 500 applicants per job opening, said Sharef, adding: "While it's great that the Internet allows people to apply to lots of jobs, it has led to some very unhealthy behaviour. Job-seekers tell me that they apply to as many as 500 jobs in four to five months without doing almost any research.

One candidate told me he had written a computer programme that allowed him to auto-apply to every single job on Craigslist in a certain city. Given that candidates don't self-select, recruiters think of résumés as "mostly spam", and their approach is to "wade through the mess" to find the treasures. Of these, only one person gets hired -- one out of 500 -- so the "success rate" is very low for us and for our candidates."

How are people tested? HireArt asks candidates to do tasks that mimic the work they would do on the job. If it is for a web analytics job, HireArt might ask: "You are hired as the marketing manager at an e-commerce company and asked to set up a Web site analytics system. What are the key performance indicators you would measure? How would you measure them?"

Or, if you want to be a social media manager, said Sharef, "you will have to demonstrate familiarity with Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, HTML, On-Page SEO and Key Word Analysis". Sample question: "Kanye West just released a new fashion collection. You can see it here. Imagine you had to write a tweet promoting this collection. What would your tweet be?" Someone applying for a sales job would have to record a sales pitch over video.

Added Sharef: "What surprises me most about people's skills is how poor their writing and grammar are, even for college graduates. If we can't get the basics right, there is a real problem." Still, she added, HireArt saw many talented people who were just "confused about what jobs they are qualified for, what jobs are out there and where they fit in".

So what does she advise? Sharef pointed to one applicant, a Detroit woman who had worked as a cashier at Borders. She realised that that had no future, so she taught herself Excel.

"We gave her a very rigorous test, and she outscored people who had gone to Stanford and Harvard. She ended up as a top applicant for a job that, on paper, she was completely unqualified for."

People get rejected for jobs for two main reasons, said Sharef. One, "you're not showing the employer how you will help them add value," and, two, "you don't know what you want, and it comes through because you have not learned the skills that are needed".

The most successful job candidates, she added, are "inventors and solution-finders", who are relentlessly "entrepreneurial" because they understand that many employers today don't care about your resume, degree or how you got your knowledge, but only what you can do and what you can continuously reinvent yourself to do. Testimonial by Prof Dr Daphne M. Tequillo-Mallari, EDS/Akamai PhD in Management in 2012

WHAT EDS STANDS FOR

By Daphne M. Tequillo-Mallari
(PhD Management, 2012)

My enrollment at EDS Business School (EDS) started more on curiosity than on knowledge building. Being a Certified Public Accountant whose inclination is on the practicalities of life, I tend to look more on providing solutions to problems rather than on building theories. Thus, similar to people from my profession, getting a higher education is least on my priority list.

My stay at EDS, however, expanded my paradigm. EDS has designed a curriculum in small packages consisting of workable theories that are easy to assimilate, highly practical and mentally stimulating. Designed for executives and professionals, the program may be completed in a year or two depending on the amount of effort and concentration one is willing to give.

This curriculum format is a welcome change from those of us who have been used to the more traditional educational system but it does not end there. The most outstanding feature of EDS is its ability to institute intervention to make a positive difference.

The diploma I received from Akamai University through EDS helped me to believe in my ability and emboldens me to seek new avenues to share my talents with. EDS helped me realize that a diploma is not just a certificate of completion but rather a commitment to contribute an idea, an effort and an action for positive change. I am now connected with the University Research Office of Palawan State University and I have experienced personal and career fulfillment knowing that I am spreading my wings simultaneously learning, sharing and contributing to my university in a new way.

This for me is what EDS stands for.
